Yet another 14th August and we celebrate 73 years of Pakistan – a land won for freedom and independence of its people. However, somewhere down the line these notions have been misunderstood and misconstrued to the benefit of few and sheer disadvantage of many, many true Pakistanis.
My contribution to Pakistan on this day and always will be what I know best: acknowledge that I still don’t know much and have to read, learn and grow!
Here are 5 books that expand our horizons on what we know about Pakistan, its origin and can do for its future:
The Great Partition: The Making of India and Pakistan by Yasmin Khan
The Sole Spokesman: Jinnah, the Muslim League and the Demand for Pakistan by Ayesha Jalal
Being Pakistani: Society, Culture and the Arts by Rumi, Raza
Muslim Zion: Pakistan as a Political Idea by Faisal Devji
Pakistan: The Garrison State: Origins, Evolution, Consequences (1947-2011) by Ishtiaq Ahmed
This list is not exhaustive by any means but rather a small sampler. There are dozens of other books out there and frankly all of them demand our reading!
I will point out that it is not feasible for one to love their country and not be curious about it. In 73 years we have loved Pakistan yet cornered those who critique it but its time to change. Critique is as important to growing our patriotism as it is to growing personally. Ask your parents why they find flaws in you, and they will tell you because they want better for you. This Independence Day, love Pakistan and read about Pakistan!
